      西滢先生來信急索文藝的稿子,我近日實在沒有作文的功夫,這怎麽辦呢!篇翻舊稿,大都沒有完篇,要完篇亦非一二日內所可急就。末了,找得了這一篇東西。這篇既名爲"憶"當然沒有所謂完不完,所以就取此塞責。
      我的父親極喜收藏書畫;光複那一年,從安慶帶回來的卷軸很不少。我飽覽之下,使我在讀書如遊山以外又開了一個新境界。此後,我父繼續在南京,蘇州,杭州收集,買了下來都交我保管。我雖不是一個藝術家,能分析的批評它們在藝術上的價值,但這渾然的美感竟把我深深的陶醉了。
      我的興致是極高的,一件事情不幹則已,既幹則必竭盡我的力量做去。自從書畫成了我的癖好之後,我常到人家去要求看名人的真迹,或到書鋪子裏翻看新出的印本,自己駐買些書畫家的傳記和評論藝術的書,考查他們的相承的統系和不同的派別。
      經了五六年的陶冶,雖是無人指點,也覺別有會心。當北京大學初辦畫法研究會時,曾買了許多珂羅版印的畫冊畫片;我以會外人替他們編成一冊很詳細的目錄,自以爲分類部次甚有法度。但這本目錄沒有印出,我自己也沒有存稿,甚爲可惜。
      民國六年十月,偶陪了戚長遊三殿。順道到古物陳列所參觀。陳列所有兩部分,文華殿裏是書畫,武英殿裏是古代的彜器和宋以來的各種工藝品。我們進文華殿時,頓使我受一大刺戟。
      這裏邊真有許多好東西,尤其是宋代的院體畫和明代的文人畫,精妍秀逸之氣樸人眉宇。把以前所見的一比,就顯出我家收藏的粗陋,而珂羅版印本也已失了神采。
      我抑不住的喜悅,把我的心花也怒放了!我正想在筆記冊上把極心賞的幾幀的名目鈔了出來,不幸瞥見小屏風上寫著的參觀規則是禁止撮影和筆記的,警察又很很的跟隨,使我在懷中摸著了筆記冊而不敢取出。
      退一步吧,想每幀多看上幾眼,而同遊的人又沒有我的興致,他們只是匆匆一走,我也只得隨著出來。歸後把記得的寫出,約有三四十件,戚長誇獎我的好記性。我道:"看了二百幀只記得三四十幀,這算什麽好記性呢!看我明天再去,把所有的盡記了出來!"
      那時我住在北大西齊,明天早起,就在對面的小飯館裏吃了一頓飽飽朝飯。上午九點,陳列所初開門時,我就進去了。這次一人獨看,看的時間由得我隨意伸縮。每逢到一幅心愛的,就立上十分二十分鍾,對著它端相。直相到下午三點許才出來,陳列所已快關門了。這次的成績可真不少,連同上一天所記的共得一百八十余件,所差的不過十分之一了。此後又于七年四月,九年三月進去兩回,續補了六十余件(陳列的東西時有更換,故溢出二百件之後)。
      自九年夏間畢業以來,自己的督促和人家的責望逼得我沒有閑暇,連自己家裏的書畫也很不容易抽出時間去展看。這次到京已有十五個月,竟不曾到過文華殿一回,正似京師圖書館爲我最愛到的一處地方,但在這時期之中還沒有去過一樣。
      這篇東西,曾有友人要我寫清,刊入報紙。我總想把記載清宮書畫的《佩文齋書畫譜》,《石渠寶笈》,《秘殿珠琳》等書取來勘校一過,再行寫正,所以沒有應允。但至今已有九年,還未校過一書,這樣蹉蛇下去,說不定終我之生也就不會有這一天,反不如現在發表出來,可以引起其他有興並有暇的人去做我想做的工作,這也是一個道理。所以就在本刊發表。材料出于倉卒的記憶,一定有很多的譌誤,渴望讀者指正。
      我對于古物陳列所的辦理上,很有幾處極不滿意。借著發表這文的機會,縷述于下,希望他們能因此而改善。如他們假作癡聾,依然如故,只得希望國民自己起來解決了。古物是全國公有的古物,本來我們太放任了!
      第一,古物陳列所的東西不應該守秘密,不許人家攝影及筆記。我們所以要把古物公開,原要使國民得以欣賞,得以研究,而欣賞與研究原非匆匆一看所能了事的。外國的美術館中,不但許人攝影,而且許人坐在那裏臨摹,做長期的工作。這才是正當的辦法。
      現在他們不許人家攝影,當可說是爲要得到發賣印片的專利;至于連筆記也禁止,除了說他們守秘密之外,我真想不出有絲毫的理由。但他們只能禁人的筆記而不能禁人的腹記,結果還有我這樣的戆人寫了出來,印在報上,可見要用一手掩盡天下目是不可能的,徒然耗費心機而已。
      第二,古物陳列所的東西應當知道是國家的公物,不應當聽讓官僚闊人索取。這句話初看甚覺可笑,但事實是這樣。當袁世凱稱帝時,曾在所中提出許多珍貴的東西送給外國人和他的大臣,藉爲贊成君憲的一種酬報。那時報紙上曾有幾回記載;可惜這些報紙不在手頭,未能鈔出。今把粘在冊上的報紙寫下二則,以見一班:
      徐世昌因陸榮廷本屆壽辰,特派武官朱少偉,黃得如赉帶禮物四大木箱,前赴武鳴致送。聞有武英殿中所陳列之大花樽二尊。玉器四具......各物統共值四十萬元。陸榮廷以此等皆屬公物,除將題有上下款之壽屏壽序酌收外,其余珍物已交來使赉還,即日護送出港雲。(八年十月二十日《嶽南新報》)
      曆代帝王像及《出警入跸圖》,民國四年雖經陳列一次,爲日無多,即由公府提取。中外人士往往以未曾快睹爲憾。此次因減價期限較長,特由公府提回,暫行懸挂文華,武英,太和各殿,藉餍中外人士之望。燈節後仍須送還,並非永久陳列,幸勿交臂失之!(十一年二月都是《門新報所》登古物陳列所減價廣告)
      我們看,古物陳列所的東西,做了總統就可以自由提取,作壽禮送,最高的行政機關也可以自由提取,據爲已有,這是什麽道理?這類的事情,當然隨時都有,聽說只要做了總理總長就有開條提取的權力,不過事情秘密,加以國民的不注意,因此,若無其事而已。
      最近在報紙上,又見清室善後委員會中檢理清室檔案,發見清室向陳列所提物的單子。以亡清的皇帝而竟向民國的古物陳列所隨意提取物件,這真是豈有此理!照這樣下去,陳列的東西不要全給闊人提完而後關門嗎!
      我們對于此等事,決不能原諒他們的屈于勢力之下而不得不然,因爲他們還不懂什麽叫做古物陳列所,還不懂什麽是民國國家設立的古物陳列所,他們只會恭恭謹謹的做闊人的寶藏外庫的經理者,所以對于國民的參觀只有"訑訑之聲音顔色,距人于千裏之外",他們也正不求我們的原諒呢!
      第三,古物陳列所的東西應當編印目錄,克日公布,聽人購買。我們到陳列所所看見的,只有文華武英兩殿及太和殿中零落的幾件;所有藏異物件的庫--鹹安宮寶蘊樓--裏邊究不知存著多少。因爲有好許多東西我們不得看見,即看見的亦因不許撮影和筆記而不久就遺忘,所以由得他們提取而我們無從知覺,即知覺了也不會激起甚深的眷戀。
      這真是借公開之名而行秘密之實的一個好方法!所以我們應當要求他們編出目錄:詳加說明,一方面可以供給我們研究的方便,一方面也可以杜絕將來再有提取的事情的發生。這目錄上並應將十余年來被奪的物品名目及奪取人名列入,以便作收回之計。
      第四,古物陳列所的東西應當全部攝影精印出售。數年來,武英殿的門口確有幾個玻璃櫃子裝著出售的影印周銅器冊,董香光畫冊,郎世甯等畫片和明信片。但種數的寡少,印刷的粗劣,還沒有一家小店鋪的規模。我們只要把寶蘊留真取來一看,便可知道最俗下的印本也不如此過。
      我們平日常說犯著俗氣的是商賈氣,是市儈氣,但市儈商賈印出的書畫片卻還能講究雅致的裝璜,還不致全失書畫本身的美感,古物陳列所印出發賣的算什麽呢?這些模糊失神的東西,我曆次想買而終于沒有買,就爲買了回去,對于我所極賞識的書畫要漸漸的化爲惡感了。
      北京城中好的印刷鋪子到底還有,寫字秀氣一點的人也未死絕,何苦專煩下等的印刷鋪去糟蹋古人的名迹,專請寫招牌人去開封面呢!他們如能把所藏的東西精印出來,即使評鑒考證方面未能完備,也未嘗不可運銷京外和國外,做一筆好買賣,來貼補自己的經費。可惜他們枉擔負了保管古物的職責,實際上連商賈的知識還彀不到!
      第五,古物陳列所的門票不應賣得這樣貴。現在買進紫禁城(即東華,西華兩門)的票計洋三毛,陳列所每殿一元。廉價期內,每殿減爲五毛,而進紫禁城的票不減。那麽,我們進去一次,平時是二元三毛,廉價期內是一元三毛。在這生計枯窘的時候,定出這樣貴的票價,簡直是拒絕人家的進去。所以進去的人就少極了。本年二月五日,我和我妻到武英殿,拿了一張五元的鈔票叫他們找出四元,他們竟找不出;幸而覓得一張零票,方能買票進去。進去之後,在三小時之內,所見的遊人只有五六個。這尚是陰曆的新年,尚是在廉價期中,而遊人人少竟如此,賣票房就隨著而一寒至此,這便見得他們定了高價的效果了!
      其實,東華門到西華門這一條路早已成了闊人通行的道路,馬車僅可以自由通過,挂公署徽章的人坐的人力車也不會受阻擋,這三毛錢的門票原不過留難一般平民罷了。至于太和殿上放了一點東西,借此爲廉價期內不減價的理由,更是拙笨的騙人方法。幾個木刻嵌字的屏風,幾個雕刻盤龍花紋的櫃子,幾個景泰藍的小寶塔,零零散散的放在殿上,沒有一毫統系,也沒有什麽美術意味,並且與太和殿的殿宇是十分的不相稱,這算什麽呢?萬牲園中的暢觀樓須另行買票,本已不通,新近放了一座鳄魚的標本,竟加了三倍的票價,弄得自此以後輕易沒有人進去。
      官僚辦事的可笑,大率如此,他們若是不要人家到來,免得許多麻煩,便應取消公開的名義;他們若是要多賺錢,則賺錢自有賺錢的方法,斷不宜一味勒索高價,使仿望而卻步。在這上,又使我歎息他們連商賈的知識也彀不到了!
      第六,古物陳列所的經費應當建議增加。在《現代評論》第十一期中,讀到唐有壬先生的《我們對于財政善後的主張》,知道陳列所的經費每月只有一千元。這使我對于他們很起憫憐的同情,對于這些古物也不禁起了恐怖的感覺。我們想,這一種元即使按月拿到,除了發給薪水工金之外,那裏還有余瀝可以及到古物身上;何況在這連欠帶扣的政費之中,一個月能拿得到多少!讓一班生計困苦的人終日對著一大堆的珍貴物品,這是如何的危險!今將兩月前失去東坡墨迹一事的報紙記載鈔錄于下:
      古物陳列所文化殿陳設之曆代名家書畫,日前經該所楊所長檢查,失去蘇東坡墨寶三軸。該所長即將陳設科經手人王劉全吉等派人監視。昨日探悉該所自此項竊案查覺後,隨即呈報內務部。內長龔心湛聞之,甚爲震怒,即下一手論,略謂"古物陳列所長呈報失去字畫數件,其中顯有情節,不能以疏忽二字即可卸責。應著限該所所長督同所員,于三日內將原物悉數查獲;否則從嚴罰處"雲雲。......(十四年二月十二日《晨報》)
      古物陳列所文化殿失去蘇東坡墨寶三軸。自查覺後,內務部令該所所長楊乃赓于三日內將原物悉數查獲,否則從嚴罰辦各節,前已揭載本報。茲悉該所所長因該項失物雖經多方偵查,尚無著落,積尤成疾,已于昨日病故雲。......(十四年三月三日《晨報》)
      這一件事實,固然不能說定它完全因爲經費短少而發生,但經費短少至少是一個重要的原因吧。照這個樣子拖延下去,陳列所東西即使不提完,恐怕也要偷完了
      我們不許再有徐世昌一般的人把古物奪去送禮,也不忍再有楊乃赓一般的人遭逢了不幸而嚇死,更不願意這些古物成了秘密的東西,使我們出了很貴的票價而僅作匆匆的觀覽,且毫不能知道寶蘊樓的底蘊。我們主張澈底的公開,把寶蘊樓的全部也開放,陳列的地方不夠,可推廣至傳心殿諸處;無論何人,只要納了很微的票價,就得進去自由賞鑒,使一般平民都受得到優越的美育的陶冶。
      還希望陳列所的所員們學到一點商業上的常識,會得計劃如何可使遊人衆多,如何可使遊人滿意,如何可使遊人心愛的作品都有精美的印片買了回去,作永久的欣賞。這等的問題都解決時,便是政費拿不到,也未嘗不可因國民的同情而圖發展了。這是爲國家,爲人民,爲陳列所自身計都有益的事情,不知道他們有沒有意興去做?
      古物陈列所是以奉天和熱河两处行宫中的物品成立的;听说从这两处运来的时候,已经失去了好多珍品;十余年来,巧偷索夺,又损失了许多。此外性质类似的,有以内阁藏书成立的京师图书馆,有以国子监藏器及内阁大库的档案成立的历史博物馆。它们规模既不大,经费尤艰窘,所以图书馆中冬天不能生火,夜间不能点灯,而博物馆庭户阒然,凄其无人,我们到底不能知道它算不算开馆备人入览。
      自從廢除了清帝的尊號,從事點查清宮之後,我們很快樂,將來可以建立一個規模弘大的博物院了,每看報紙上登載的《點查報告》,何等的眉飛色舞!但細細的打聽他們的經費有沒有著落,總是用搖頭來回答。清宮的東西是極多的,遠在以上所說的幾個機關之上,若再沒有穩當的經費,便是將來多出一個放大的古物陳列所,預備做長期的巧偷索奪的資料而已;就是監守嚴密,絕無弊窦,也不過多出一個放大的曆史博物館,若存若亡,供遊人的憑吊而已!我們對于這種得過且過,毫沒有文化觀念的政府,真覺得填塞了滿腹的尤慮與悲傷。我們的麻木的國民呵,你們全都看得慣這種政府的措置嗎?你們也都毫沒有一點文化觀念嗎?可悲呀!可悲呀!
      我原意做一個《憶錄》的小序,料不到一下筆之後竟收不住了,寫了這許多字。開頭說沒有功夫作文,卻已經在百忙中硬騰出可兩個半天的功夫了。我對于古物陳列所的意見原已積了好久,借了這個機會,許我傾懷一吐,非常的暢快,這是要謝謝西滢先生的逼稿之功的。

      例言九則
      一,陳列所中簽題雖分朝代,而陳列次序並不按照朝代;今爲之編排。其無人名及有人名而查不到記載者,概列于一朝之末。
      二,陳列所中簽題朝代間有錯誤,如標滕昌祐爲宋,標智永爲唐之類,今悉改正。
      三,陳列所簽題人名,有書正名者,有書表字者,參差不齊。如《風雨歸舟圖》標爲李唐。《艾炙圖》標爲李唏古,其弊使觀者誤認爲二人。今悉改寫正名。間有正名不及表字之爲人易曉者,則書表字于正名之下,加以括弧。
      四,陳列之卷子有全展開者,有半展開者。全展者得見其題跋,半展者則只見本圖而止,有無題跋無從知悉。故此錄中所記題跋人名極不詳備。
      五,絹本與紙本,設色與墨筆,記憶中間不甚明了者,即贊揚缺去。
      六,偶加的評語只是寫出我自己的感想;我不是美術家,所加的批評當然沒有客觀的真實性。請讀者諸君不要信任才好。
      七,陳萬裏先生曾于七年九月,九年一月往看兩次,對于我所記錄的略有補正,今錄入。
      八,狄楚青先生曾在時報上發表些批評,今就所見者錄入。

      李公鳞《山庄图长卷》: 纸本。墨笔。无署名。清高宗收得二本,定此本为伪作;然谓仅下真迹一等。真本储石渠宝笈中。此卷首有明李东阳篆书题端;跋有洪武初年牧羊山樵一通,董其昌一通。
      李公麟《十八应真图》卷: 绢本。墨笔。
      李公麟《七佛图》卷: 墨笔。实七幅,应装册者。
      李公麟《观世音像》立幅: 墨笔。像端有文徵明八十一岁时所题字,细若蝇头。

      赵令穰(大年)《春山平远图》卷: 绢本。设色。

      马贲《牧牛图》长卷: 绢本。图内牛二十余头,羊数头,牧童十余人,或卧牛背,或相搏击,或持竿驰驱,绝为主动。
      米芾山水立幅: 纸本。杨万里题五绝一首云,《春江欲入户,两势来不已,小屋似渔舟,蒙蒙水云里》。按此幅无大内藏弄之印,且图边有近人(横云山人)新跋疑为加入陈列所者。
      米芾《烟树云山图》卷: 纸本。有项圣谟跋。清高宗题,谓"纸不类宋,姑存之避暑山庄"。
      马和之《山庄消暑图》卷: 绢本。设色。
      马和之山水立幅: 绢本。设色。写春景。
      马和之《五台胜概图》立幅: 绢本。设色。
      李唐(唏古)《风雨归舟图》卷: 绢本。写风雨骤来时树枝摇拂,水波涌荡,舟子急欲傍岸,客急欲避雨,一种手忙脚乱之状,声色俱厉,令观者气慑。宋画之善为人情。吾于此见之矣,亦于此叹观止矣!董其昌跋,谓虽有火齐木难不肯易;并谓某处尚藏其稿本。
      李唐《艾炙图》立幅: 绢本。设色。图内写一受炙之人蹲于地,旁二人力持其腕,一人踏其足而塞住其口,其后一走方医生支了药囊,俯腰为之施炙,一单子正张手撕揭膏药;受炙者攒眉张口,竭力挣扎,筋力俱尽,苦不可言。与《归舟图》同为全神贯注之作。
      古物陳列所所員俞明有臨摹本,置于原圖之下。
      蘇漢臣《嬰戲圖》立幅:絹本。設色。寫兒童拜泥佛,極盡憨態。
      苏汉臣《懋迁图》长卷: 绢本。设色。写衢巷间引车卖浆者流叫卖货物之状,以及弄蛇诸戏,儿童聚观之状,极真切。卖水人所推水车,格式与今日所见无二,足徵八百年来无甚进步
      刘松年《二十四孝图》册: 凡二十四帧,每帧前半为刘氏所作图,后半为赵孟坚所书事略。图为绢本,书为纸本。按,此册陈列所签题《赵子固绘》,予察末页黄庭坚事为一帧,其屏风上有"刘松年造"四细字,而赵氏于事略之末题"彝齐居士赵孟坚书",是则刘画而赵书明矣。今改正。
      刘松年《异方职贡图》卷: 绢本。设色。图约六七帧,亦应装册者。图中写吐蕃,波斯诸国朝贡之状;图后均附说明。
      马远《仙严坐月图》立幅: 纸本。粗笔,不设色。
      宋徽宗写诗卷: 纸本。以瘦金体书五律一首,极奇横之致。狄葆贤评,"笔势飞动,流转如意,洵为神品"。
      宋徽宗《重圆图》立幅: 绢本。设色。幅不高。画猿猴母子相抱,又甲虫二,菜一本。以虫谐重,以猿谐圆,望南还之意也。
      林椿《四季花鸟图》卷: 绢本。设色。凡分四节;写秋叶败枯状尤工。狄葆贤评,"林卷设色如新,精妙绝伦,题款字体确为宋人所书,真迹无疑"。
      陈居中《茄子图》卷: 绢本。设色。精工甚。
      方椿年《天女散花图》卷: 纸本。空白处悉填石青,状天上也。
      赵孟坚《水仙图》卷: 纸本。墨笔。幅长约二丈。"赵子固印"乃朱画者,恐不可恃。
      龚开(圣与)《钟馗移居图》卷: 绢本。写小鬼给事状,殊堪绝倒。有状况允明跋。
      李相山水立幅: 绢本。李相未详其人,签题标名或有误。
      无名氏画观音立幅: 绢本。
      无名氏画行旅图方幅: 绢本。设色。画山甚古朴,旅人状若兵士。清高宗题,有"北宋近乎唐"之语。

The one gives us a report certainly authentic, but probably incomplete; the other account is, beyond all doubt, a highly idealised portraiture, but seems to contain some traits directly copied from the original, which may well have escaped a less philosophical observer than Plato. Aristotle also furnishes us with some scanty notices which are of use in deciding between the two rival versions, although we cannot be sure that he had access to any better sources of information than are open to ourselves. By variously combining and reasoning from these data modern critics have produced a third Socrates, who is often little more than the embodiment of their own favourite opinions. the summer when I wasn't teaching Latin to my two stupid children.
